Robert Bailey

Bob is retired from the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago and is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Division of Epidemiology. He first came to Kenya in 1976 to work on a baboon ecology study in the Masai Mara National Reserve, and transitioned to study Efe Pygmies in the Ituri Forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo for 14 years. He returned to Kenya to work on HIV/AIDS prevention, primarily in Kisumu. He co-founded the Nyanza Reproductive Health Society (NRHS) in 2002 and has been actively engaged in research and HIV prevention programs since then. Bob holds a PhD in Anthropology from Harvard University and an MPH in Epidemiology from Emory University. His experience with non-profits includes founding the Ituri Forest Peoples Fund, which promoted health, education and indigenous rights of people in the Ituri Forest and became a project under Cultural Survival (https://www.culturalsurvival.org), and co-founding NRHS for which he serves as Secretary of the Board. Bob is also an avid birder and supports a variety of organizations devoted to bird conservation.
