Walter Obiero

Dr. Walter Obiero Ochieng is a physician, health economist, and global health leader with more than two decades of experience advancing health equity across sub-Saharan Africa. He earned his medical degree from the University of Nairobi and a PhD in Health Policy Administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

As a Health Economist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Ochieng’s work focuses on the economics of global health, particularly the cost-effectiveness of interventions for neglected tropical diseases, malaria, and maternal and child health. His work is guided by a commitment to ensuring that limited health resources reach the people and communities who need them most.

His career reflects a commitment that spans both frontline clinical care and large-scale public health leadership. He has provided medical services with Médecins Sans Frontières in South Sudan and MERLIN in post-war Liberia and later led multi-million-dollar programs supported by PEPFAR and the Gates Foundation that expanded access to HIV prevention services across Kenya, delivering more than 150,000 procedures.

Dr. Ochieng has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented his work at major international conferences. An Aspen Institute Fellow, he believes that building healthier communities extends beyond healthcare alone. He serves on the board of a rural primary school in Kenya and remains committed to community development and creating opportunities for future generations. He is currently based in Atlanta, Georgia.
